There are three ways to announce your engagement. Informal announcing is when you tell everybody and his brother that the man of your dreams just proposed and you said yes! Formal announcing comes in two forms – newspaper announcements and mailed announcements. For information on newspaper announcements, click here.

Etiquette is divided on formal mailed announcements. Some sources say they are not appropriate or needed. Other sources say they’re okay for long engagements as long as you only mail them to people you will invite to the wedding. All sources agree that the relatively new tradition of Save the Date cards is better.
If you do decide to mail announcements, the wording used is pretty basic.
“Mr. and Mrs. Jones are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Jessica, to Jim Smith,” followed by the date you got engaged.
As I already said, do not send engagement announcements to people you will not be inviting to the wedding but instead mail them wedding announcements the day of the wedding.
