Traditionally, newspaper announcements are used to tell the world of your upcoming wedding. Because of this, if you’re having a small wedding, skip the newspaper because you may offend a lot of people who don’t get invited to your wedding.
Announce the engagement in your local newspaper and/or the newspapers in the towns you and your fiancé grew up in.

There is a wide window for when to publish your announcement which ranges from six weeks to a year before the wedding.
When sending the announcement, include a black and white glossy 5×7 or 8×10 engagement photo. Write your name on the back of the photo. Mail the announcement to the society editor in a cardboard reinforced envelope. Do not expect to get the photo back.
Include with the announcement the following information for both you and the groom:
- Name
- Town of residence
- Schools attended and degrees granted
- Place of employment and job title
- Parents’ names
- Date and location of the wedding
Etiquette Tips for the Announcement:
- The word “Late” should precede any deceased parents but only the surviving parent makes the announcement.
- If both parents are deceased, a relative, friend or the bride should make the announcement – never the groom’s parents.
- If your parents are divorced, either parent may make the announcement. Traditionally, it would be the parent the bride has lived with but mention both parents.
- Never give your full address.
